That’s it. Goodbye Shanghai!

My 7 months in Shanghai are already over. I am sitting here in my apartment, (almost) everything packed and waiting for my flight at around midnight. On Tuesday, I had my farewell party. We went with about 20 friends and colleagues to a irish pub close to the office and had a great evening.

Shanghai was a great experience, but, as a world traveler from a city with more cows than residents once said, “it is time to move on!”. ;-) I will be in Germany for 4 weeks to finish some work and have a lot vacation, including Christmas with my family.

Afterwards the next adventure starts: 6 months Palo Alto

Ok, I will now leave to my last lunch at Bluefrog. Chili Cheese Fries forever! ;-)

Oberservation deck of Jin Mao tower

After over 6 months, I finally made it to the observation deck of Jin Mao tower!

The observation deck is on the 88th floor of the Jin Mao tower, which is 340.1 meter high with a construction space area of 1,520 square meters. It’s the biggest observation deck in Shanghai. From the top of it, your are able to view the Yangtze River entering the sea and all the scenery of the metropolitan Shanghai. You can also send your best wishes to every corner around the world with its attached post office, the highest one in China.

You never have to wait to see the world from the Jin Mao observatory. Taking the two elevators at an incredible speed of 9.1m per second, you are able to cover 88 floors in 45 seconds smoothly.

Look down inside the observation deck! A great picture of the highest deluxe five-star hotel of the world – the Grand Hyatt Hotel – is exhibited in front. The biggest atrium, from 53F to 87F with height of 152m and diameter of 27m, looks like a time tunnel leading to the future.

News from Shanghai

After people are already complaining about, that this blog gets too technical (Hi Rudolf! ;-) )…some news from Shanghai.

Last week, Edda, a colleague from Germany was in Shanghai on a business trip. Highlight of the weekend, at least for me, was the visit of Absolut Icebar, having Hotpot dinner and having cocktails in bar Cloud 9 at the top of Jin Mao tower.

The Absolut Icebar is located at the main entertainment street, Huaihai Lu. The bar is divided in two parts, a bigger dining bar and the icebar itself. Before entering the icebar, you get a blue coat which let’s one look like Santa Claus on drugs. ;-) The icebar itself is not so big as I expected, but looks great. The drinks, all include Absolut Vodka, are served in glasses made of ice.

For the Hotpot dinner, Michael and I planned to order some living shrimps to see how Edda reacts, but unfortunately living shrimps were not available anymore, so that we took dead ones and frog’s legs. Thought-provoking was, when a Chinese colleague of mine told me today, that frog’s legs normally taste like chicken…the stuff we got at the hotpot dinner tasted more fishy. Well…whatever…

The bar Cloud 9 in Jin Mao tower is part of the Grand Hyatt hotel in Pudong. It is located on the 87th floor and offers a tremendous view on the city.

By the way…Michael and me are now “The Butchers”. (Background: We got those knifes, when I requested knifes for cutting vegetables (Kartoffelmesser)…)

And Edda documented Michael’s gluttony. ;-)

Diverse Apartment View

In the last weeks I took every now and then a picture of the view from my apartment. It is intersting how different the view can be depending on the weather.

On the pictures you can see from the left to the right:

Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre

On Sunday, Christoph, Verena and I went to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre at People’s Square. This museum tells the story of Shanghai’s evolution. It features a lot of pictures from the past, computer animations from the future and a giant scale model of Shanghai how it is expected to be in 2020. (You know…many things are planned here… ;-) )

431km/h – Maglev (Transrapid) in Shanghai

Last week Monday, I took the Maglev (Magnetic Leviation Train or Transrapid) from Longyang Road to Pudong International Airport to pick up Judith. The train speeds up to 431km/h on its ~30km long track. You can imagine, that the ride only takes a few minutes (6, if I remember correctly).
