I am using it in combination with Dropbox to realize synchronized ToDo and Notes lists on multiple Macs.

But after some testing, it looks as if the contents of encrypted notes are still available as plaintext in Yojimbo’s database file:

Am I missing anything or is the encryption feature more or less nonsense?

Thanks for writing in; we appreciate your interest in Yojimbo, and I apologize for the delay in getting back to you.

The specific behavior you show is expected. When you encrypt a note (or other prexisting item), its contents are removed from the database, but remnants of that info may be visible in the disk file until the space is reclaimed by sqlite (CoreData).

Any info added after you’ve encrypted an item, will be stored only in an encrypted form, unless you subsequently choose to decrypt the item. (Viewing is a transient process which does not affect the state of the data on disk.)

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems. Furthermore, it synchronizes screen savers so they all start and stop together and, if screen locking is enabled, only one screen requires a password to unlock them all. At that time, I had to use the console on Mac OS X and Linux to start/stop Synergy2. Configuration was done by editing text files. A GUI was only available for the Windows version, so that at least on Mac OS X and Linux the usability could have been better.

Yesterday, I read Adam Pash’ Hack Attack: Control multiple computers with a single keyboard and mouse on lifehacker.com. He mentions, that for Mac OS X a GUI for Synergy2, called SynergyKM, is available. So, I gave it another try. This time, the setup was very smooth. Just a few clicks on Mac and Notebook and the setup was complete.

What I like most is, that my TFT display has an analog as well as a DVI connector. So, the Mac is connected using DVI, whereas the notebook is attached to the display via an analog cable. Now I can switch between both using a button on the display. Together with Synergy2, it is a really cheap KVM switch.

Today, I downloaded the final version and give it another try. Unbelievable but true: I booted the LiveCD system and (almost) everything works without any manual configuration! Sound, Wireless LAN, Desktop Effects (AIGLX + compiz built-in), changing screen resolution and much more.

After a few minutes, I found out that although the bluetooth device in the Mac Mini was recognized, it did not find any other bluetooth devices. And there does not seem to be a bluetooth manager applet like the network manager.
Furthermore my relative new scanner (Canon Lide 70) does not seem to be supported…

Anyway, I will definitely get rid of the Windows Vista installation next to Mac OS X in favor of Ubuntu. Goodbye MS.

Interesting comment by Jeff Han in the first video: 3D multi-touch would be possible technically, but it would be very hard for humans to get used to it as they need something physically to push up against.

Visor provides a systemwide terminal window accessible via a hotkey, much like the consoles found in games such as Quake. Visor requires elements of Quartz only found in 10.4. Visor is compatible with 10.4 and higher only.

Visor is implemented as a bundle for SIMBLE (Smart InputManager Bundle Loader).

SIMBL (Smart InputManager Bundle Loader) – pronounced like “symbol” or “cymbal” allows you to build hacks for Cocoa applications and apply the code selectively based on an application’s unique identifier. It’s not really all that smart, or even clever, but it’s smarter than just blindly loading code into an application.

That’s how it looks like:

GeekTool is a PrefPane (System Preferences module) for Panther or Tiger to show system logs, unix commands output, or images (i.e. from the internet) on your desktop (or even in front of all windows). Use File mode to monitor MacOS X activity with /var/tmp/console.log or /var/log/system.log, or Shell mode to launch custom scripts or commands like “df” to check space left on filesystems, “uptime” to monitor load of your machine… FInally, Image mode helps you monitor bandwith usage, CPU loads, memory availability of your server, via tools like MRTG or RRD.
