Apple Customer Service

A friend of mine from Germany bought an iPhone when he was on a business trip to New York last year in September. He was very happy with it, but after a couple of months the key to lower the ringer/sound volume was broken which resulted in the volume automatically decreasing all the time.
He called the Apple hotline and was told, that US iPhones can only be send in in the US and that it can only be returned to a US mail address. Therefore I took the phone with me, when I was in Germany a couple of weeks ago.

At first, I went to the Apple Store in Palo Alto and asked to get help with the broken iPhone. I was told, that I can only get help after registering for an appointment at the Genius Bar in the store. So, I went home, set up an appointment online and came back a day later.
I explained the problem to the guy at the Genius Bar and was told, that Apple does not provide support for unactivated iPhones. Unactivated means, that no AT&T contract was signed for that iPhone. (After buying an iPhone in the US, you connect it to your computer, electronically sign a contract for an AT&T mobile plan online and only afterwards the iPhone can be used; but this can be bypassed by certain software hacks)
This sounded very strange to me, as I cannot image that it is possible to make the warranty dependent on the fact whether you signed another contract. Anyway, I again went home without getting any help.

Two weeks later, I found coincidentally a forum post on the internet, which mentioned a webpage on apple.com where you can enter your iPhone’s serial number and get information about the validity of the warranty as well as request support. I entered the serial number of the broken iPhone and I got the following message:

Our records indicate this product has not been activated. [..] Please note that warranty service is not dependent on activating your iPhone.

This message clearly states, that even if you do NOT activate an iPhone (= sign an AT&T contract), you still get warranty from Apple on the iPhone. Furthermore, the page provides the possibility to directly set up a service request. Unfortunately, the number of categories which can be selected is very limited and the broken volume button problem did not really fit into any of the available categories. Therefore, I just chose some other category and entered a longer explanation text into the description field, as I thought that someone would read it and react on it.
5 minutes later, I got an email saying, that my new dock is going to ship as soon as possible and that I should just put my old, broken dock into the package and return it to Apple. Well, the category which I selected randomly was “broken Dock” and there does not seem to be anyone at the Apple support who is checking such requests…they just get shipped.

To prevent the shipment of a new dock, which I do not need, I called the Apple hotline and told them the story and asked for the cancellation of the service request. The Apple support lady put me on hold for a couple of minutes and finally replied that she canceled the request.
Then I told her the story of the broken iPhone and that I would like to send it in for repair. She looked up the serial number in their system and told me, that the Apple Care Protection Plan, which is an extended 3 year warranty which you can buy extra for many Apple products, for that iPhone was expired. As the iPhone was bought without an Apple Care Protection Plan and was still in the standard 1 year warranty, her statement was total bullshit.
I told her, that the iPhone is still in the 1 year warranty and that I never bought a protection plan for it. She again put me on hold for a couple of minutes and finally told me, that she is not able to initiate a service request and that I should go to an Apple Store to directly get support. I told her, that I already tried this and that the colleagues there do not want to provide support without an activation. Suddenly she confirmed, that an activation is necessary to get support and she finally got totally confused when I told her, what Apple’s website is telling about getting support without activation.
Well, after over 30 minutes on the phone, the conversation ended without any result.

I already thought that it will probably not be possible to get any kind of support for that broken iPhone, but on the next day I found a package from Apple in front of my apartment door. As I came home late and assumed, that the Apple Support lady probably just did something wrong with the cancellation of my original support request so that the package probably only contains the dock, I did not open it.
Another day later, I again found a package in front of the apartment door. Getting curious what they are sending me now, I opened both packages. First one was an empty box to put the broken iPhone in to send it to Apple. The second one was the dock.

As I had to enter credit card information when I had set up the service request initially online, I was concerned that Apple is going to charge me money, if I do not send them a broken dock back. So, I again called the Apple hotline. This time, it was a guy who asked me for my mobile number. After he could not find my private mobile number and not my company mobile number in their system, it became clear, that he wanted to have the mobile number of the AT&T contract which you normally would sign, if you get an iPhone.
After telling him, that the phone is not activated, he said “Sorry Sir, I cannot give you support for an unactivated iPhone.” I tried convincing him, that Apple sent me stuff, which I do not want and just wanted to clarify how to give it back to Apple. But he kept saying the same sentence again and again. That made me ending the call by using some words I do not want to repeat here and I just sent both packages back; the previously empty box now with the broken iPhone in it.

Two days ago, I had a Fedex tag at my apartment’s door stating that I could pickup a package at their station. At the Fedex station, two packages were handed over to me. One contained a brand new iPhone, the second one was another empty box with a message saying that I should send back my broken iPhone….what I already did…

Summary:

You CAN get support for your not activated iPhone (but only with US pickup location and US return mail address)
Don’t believe if any Apple Support people tell something else
Don’t create online support requests within the wrong category

Hacked iPhone and you get 10$ off on an Headset?

Very interesting: When we got the (prepaid) SIM cards yesterday, the shop assistant asked me where my iPhone is from. I told her, that I brought it from Germany (well, it’s a US version, so it travelled from US to Germany and now back but does she really have time to get the full story? ;-) ). Then she asked “Is it hacked?”. In the first moment, I was a little bit shocked, but replied “Sure”. Her next comment was astonishing: “Good, otherwise it might not work with your new AT&T SIM card.”

Afterwards, I even got 10$ off on an new headset (20$ instead of 30$), as I had lost mine.

That’s what I call customer care! ;-)

How copy&paste could look like on the iPhone…

Found this on vimeo.com:

Beside the funny presentation (especially the “I love you” at the end), I basically like the concept. Although the paste-part is not very logical, as it uses the same tap combination as the copy part with a different result (going to selection mode vs. opening the clipboard window). That would mean, that you would only be able to copy AND paste something. If you copy something, but you then do not want to paste it but want to copy something else again, it would not really work.

I would prefer to have a pie menu like the terminal application Term-vt100 provides:

This might be used for copy&paste in an intuitive way.

iPhone with firmware 1.1.1 re-unlocked successfully

Update: Added steps about Installer.app installation

I just finished upgrading to the current iPhone firmware version 1.1.1. Previously, I had used the iUnlock howto which was the first description of how to unlock an iPhone to be able to use any SIM card (and not only AT&T). One side effect of that hack was, that it damaged the baseband of the phone which resulted in a not working iPhone after upgrading to the firmware. Since yesterday, a method for virginizing the iPhone is available, so that I could finally upgrade, re-activate and re-unlock it.

Step-By-Step:

  1. Virginize iPhone (only needed, if your iPhone was previously unlocked by iUnlock or anySIM)
  2. Prepare iPhone for 1.1.1 upgrade (button in iNdependence)
  3. Upgrade firmware via iTunes
  4. Activate and Jailbreak via iNdependence
  5. Copy & run anySIM on the iPhone to do the re-unlock
  6. Delete folder /private/var/root/Library/Installer via ssh/sftp
  7. Download and extract AppTapp
  8. Get Installer.app from the contents of AppTapp Installer.app file (Ctrl-Right-Click on Mac -> Show Package Contents)
  9. Upload Installer.app to /Applications on your iPhone & restart it
  10. Run Installer and update to the newest beta release of version 3 for iPhone 1.1.1 support

=> was not very complicated

iPhone

And the new iTunes store on the iPhone is really great and works with the German content.

Next is to get Installer.app running again…

blog.thebartels.de optimized for iPhone

I just installed the iWPhone WordPress plugin.

The iWPhone WordPress Plugin and Theme automatically reformats your blog’s content for optimized viewing on Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. It detects the iPhone/iPod touch’s User Agent and serves up the content with the special theme only to iPhone and iPod touch visitors, all other browsers will view your WordPress blog with your current theme.

Feedback is appreciated, especially from iPhone users. (And there are some according to the webserver logs…)

iPhone Stand

In my previous post, I complained, that the iPhone is not delivered with a stand like the iPod touch has.

Today, I bought a cheap (8 Euro; probably still too much because of my bad negotiation skills), generic PDA/Phone/iPod stand, which is normally attached to the front window of your car. I attached it next to the monitor on the desktop and it is now holding the iPhone even in horizontal mode. It’s perfect to watch movies, while using the complete monitor of the mac for doing other stuff. Another application could of course be in the car (currently not available ;-) ).

Next step will be an adapter to connect the 5.1 speaker system to the iPhone. ;-)

2007-10-04 – iPhone Stand

Dear Apple, your iPhone…

…is really great! I got one almost four weeks ago and I really like it. But why are there so many annoying issues and missing features?

  • SIMlock is annoying!*
  • no support for 3rd party applications* – I would like to see TomTom on my iPhone
  • no Copy&Paste possible
  • no synchronization of notes between iPhone and Mac / Windows (expected for next firmware/iTunes update)
  • no synchronization with two computers possible (sync calendar & contacts with company notebook; music with private PC)*
  • no possibility to send SMS to multiple senders
  • no possibility to resend a certain SMS to another recipient
  • no possibility to get stocks from other countries than USA
  • no voice dialing / control
  • no voice recording*
  • landscape mode only supported by some applications (Safari and iPod, but not e.g. SMS and Mail)
  • except in Safari, no text input possible in landscape mode – typing with both thumbs is (at least for me) only possible, if I hold the iPhone horizontally
  • no auto-sync, if something in your calendar or mailbox is changed
  • podcast can only be updated via iTunes sync – why can the iPhone not load new episodes directly via wifi (or even EDGE?)*
  • no flash support
  • no java support
  • no support for downloading files in Safari
  • impossible to send pictures in full resolution*, music* or any other files via mail
  • Mail.app does not support ics files (appointments) created by Calendar on a Mac
  • no multi-select possible (e.g. for deletion of mails)
  • camera does not have zoom
  • no video camera support
  • EQ no accessible from within the iPod functionality
  • impossible to send anything (pictures, mp3s, messages, …) via bluetooth to other devices
  • impossible to set anything from the music library as alarm sound
  • no remote control support via Mac or PC (I would like to write SMS on my Mac and send them via the iPhone)
  • no support for stereo bluetooth headsets
  • no international keyboard layout**
  • no quick possibility to pause the current track or switch to the next/previous on**
  • no direct access to iTunes store**
  • impossible to deactivate GPRS/EDGE* **
  • no games available*
  • no stand delivered with the iPhone (as like with the iPod Touch)*

* can be achieved via hacks, (inofficial) 3rd party software or other workarounds – partly not possible for current firmware version 1.1.1 due to missing activation/unlock hack.

** available since firmware 1.1.1

Long list, he? But I am still liking my iPhone very much…Apple what have you done to me? ;-)

At least get the stuff fixed quickly please! :-)

iPhone working with O2 Germany! :)

A free unlock software and howto was released to get rid of the iPhone’s simlock. And it worked perfectly, so that I can now use my original German O2 card in my iPhone! :-)

Multi-Touch

Forget the iPhone…that is real multi-touch…I need that for my Mac… ;-)

Interesting comment by Jeff Han in the first video: 3D multi-touch would be possible technically, but it would be very hard for humans to get used to it as they need something physically to push up against.
