That’s it. Goodbye Shanghai!

My 7 months in Shanghai are already over. I am sitting here in my apartment, (almost) everything packed and waiting for my flight at around midnight. On Tuesday, I had my farewell party. We went with about 20 friends and colleagues to a irish pub close to the office and had a great evening.

2007-11-27 – Farewell Party

Shanghai was a great experience, but, as a world traveler from a city with more cows than residents once said, “it is time to move on!”. ;-) I will be in Germany for 4 weeks to finish some work and have a lot vacation, including Christmas with my family.

Afterwards the next adventure starts: 6 months Palo Alto

Ok, I will now leave to my last lunch at Bluefrog. Chili Cheese Fries forever! ;-)

News from Shanghai

After people are already complaining about, that this blog gets too technical (Hi Rudolf! ;-) )…some news from Shanghai.

Last week, Edda, a colleague from Germany was in Shanghai on a business trip. Highlight of the weekend, at least for me, was the visit of Absolut Icebar, having Hotpot dinner and having cocktails in bar Cloud 9 at the top of Jin Mao tower.

The Absolut Icebar is located at the main entertainment street, Huaihai Lu. The bar is divided in two parts, a bigger dining bar and the icebar itself. Before entering the icebar, you get a blue coat which let’s one look like Santa Claus on drugs. ;-) The icebar itself is not so big as I expected, but looks great. The drinks, all include Absolut Vodka, are served in glasses made of ice.

For the Hotpot dinner, Michael and I planned to order some living shrimps to see how Edda reacts, but unfortunately living shrimps were not available anymore, so that we took dead ones and frog’s legs. Thought-provoking was, when a Chinese colleague of mine told me today, that frog’s legs normally taste like chicken…the stuff we got at the hotpot dinner tasted more fishy. Well…whatever…

The bar Cloud 9 in Jin Mao tower is part of the Grand Hyatt hotel in Pudong. It is located on the 87th floor and offers a tremendous view on the city.

By the way…Michael and me are now “The Butchers”. (Background: We got those knifes, when I requested knifes for cutting vegetables (Kartoffelmesser)…)

And Edda documented Michael’s gluttony. ;-)

Call me Tiger Woods!

Today, I had chili cheese fries for dinner at Blue Frog together with Christoph and Jan. After the second cocktail, the idea to hit some Golf balls arised, so that we quickly walked (yes! walked! no taxi! ;-) ) to the next driving range a couple hundred meters away. At first, I was unsure, wether the staff at the driving range would let me go on the driving range at all, as I was wearing shorts and flipflops. But no one complained, so that we booked the driving range for an hour…

On the way home, I stopped at a pharmacy to get some ointment for the ‘little’ blisters (see last picture) on my hands. The pharmacist looked at my hands, handed me over some ointment, then asked “for foot?” (why would I show my hands, if I want medicine for my feet??), I said “no”, then she gave me another ointment. The packaging did not contain a single latin character, so that I only could (try to) believe her.

After putting some ointment on the blisters at home, I had to realize that the ointment might not be for the purpose, for which I bought it…it burned like hell. :-( Anyway, man do not need medicine at all!! ;-)

BURGERS!!

Ok, I know…fast food is not good for health (under certain conditions ;-) ), but anyway…thanks to Reading, our COO in Labs China, we now get burgers for lunch once a week! Yippieh! :-)

Beside that, we can now get dinner at our office for 6 RMB (60 euro cents) starting at 6.30h. It is very basic (noodles, some rice, dumplings and so on), but tastes good and kills hunger. ;-) For those, who have to work longer, it is even for free after 7.30h. A really great service…

A Dream comes true – 139 Episodes MacGyver

Yesterday, Christoph and I went to my local DVD dealer and had a look what new movies they had. I already wanted to go, when I saw it. And I could not believe it. All 139 episodes of MacGyver in a nice box! Yes, MacGyver…the guy who can build bombs with only headache pills and a peace of duck tape! :-)

Well, Christoph and I are now planning to buy a sandwich toaster and do regular MacGyver-Sandwhich-Evenings. :-)

Hotpot Dinner

Last Thursday, Judith, Melina, Michael, Markus and I went to a hotpot restaurant nearby. Hotpot means, that everyone gets his own pot with some kind of sauce in it (e.g. curry sauce). Then you order some stuff like vegetables, beef, chicken, seafood and so on and just throw it in. After some time it is cooked and ready to eat.

Well, one of the things we ordered were shrimps. See what we got:

Shangri-La

Monday, Judith finally arrived in Shanghai (Yippieh! :-) ) and she will stay for the next four weeks. Monday (25th of June) evening, we went to Shangri-La to have dinner. The Yi Café offers a giant buffet with food from “China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia, Middle East as well as Europe and North America”.

Qingdao

From June 22nd until 24th, Anja, Antje, Christoph and I flew to Qingdao. The city is famous for its beer: Tsingtao (The old way of spelling Qingdao). As it is already about 10 days ago and I am just to lazy to write a longer text, just have a look at the pictures and pay attention to the comment below each of them. :-)

(Still) Living Seafood:

Yes, Subway!

Some of you might know, that I somehow was a very good customer at all those Subway fast food restaurants in Germany. ;-)

However, I first thought that Subway does not have any subsidaries in China, but a few days ago I noticed on Subway.com.cn, that there are five restaurants available in Shanghai. So, today, I had my first Chinese sub at Subway. Result: It is smaller, tastes different (not so spicy), they do not have free refills and costs less (4,5€ for a footlong sub with turkey & ham + drink + chips compared to 7,xx€ in Germany), but it tasted very good.

And the best is: With those nifty discount vouchers which seem to be available around the world, you only pay 0,70€ for a footlong sub and a drink. (1,0€ if you want chips as well) Very good, that I brought a lot vouchers with me from Germany… ;-)
