Update on 2007-03-24: I had to shut down the short URL service because of spammers missusing it. 
While I was not so keen on writing my diploma thesis, I installed a tiny short URL service at http://short.thebartels.de. It can be used to make long urls like http://www.businessweek.com/technology/…/may2006/tc20060508_588605.htm shorter: http://short.thebartels.de/1
Usage is free, there are no ads and I will not delete any created short links as long as they are not pointing to illegal content…
